APA Formatting Guidelines

The APA Publication Manual contains guidelines for three aspects of an APA paper:

This handout will review the APA page formatting guidelines and will explain how to configure Word to achieve those guidelines without a template. 

Start with the Title Page

The Abstract Page

Turn on horizontal centering (Ctrl-E).

The Body of the Paper

The Reference Page

The Rest of the Paper

If you have figures, tables, author notes, and/or appendices to add to your paper, force a manual page break between each document (Ctrl-Enter). The order of documents in your paper should be:

  1. Title page
  2. Abstract
  3. Body of the paper
  4. References
  5. Appendixes
  6. Footnotes and Notes
  7. Tables
  8. Figures
